Amelanchier is a genus of deciduous-leaved shrubs and small trees in the rose family (rosaceae), native to the temperate regions of the northern hemisphere. There are about 20 species and over 100 cultivars worldwide but due to the diversity of plants, some mis-naming and hybridisation the exact number of cultivars is not known.
Amelanchier is known by many different names, including: juneberry, snowy mespilus, serviceberry, sarvisberry, saskatoon, sugarplum, wild pear, chuckley pear, shadbush, shadwood and shadblow.
